Medical Tourism in Bosna and Herzegovina
In recent years there has been an increase in medical tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Main reason foreign guests come is because of health, recreational or aesthetic reasons and the quality of services, but also because of prices which are considerably lower than prices in their countries. Sarajevo in particular is able to offer top-quality healthcare quickly and efficiently – that’s the reason why people are starting to come from all over the world, willing to pay for medical procedures to be carried out in Sarajevo.
Spas in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The tradition of using thermo – mineral waters in our regions goes back to the past, even during the time of Greeks and Romans, who had already discovered the healing of our geothermal sources. The first chemical analyzes and recommendations for bathing water use and treatment were made by well-known experts from European baths (Visbaden and Baden-Baden). Shortly after, construction of modern bathing and rehabilitation centers has begun, where recreation was practiced.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has many natural, thermal and thermomineral sources and peloids, and among them are very rare mineral springs known in the professional circles and around the world (Crni Guber, Kulaši, Gračanica). The thermal radioactive water of Fojnice has good results in the treatment of time-consuming musculoskeletal diseases and there are very beautiful health facilities in this natural health resort and their highest value are many quality medical specialists. The medical thermal bath of „Banje Vrućice“ has a very successful effect on cardiovascular, rheumatic and neurological diseases.
Today, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 15 baths are registered as health care institutions with 3,445 beds and they have about 200,000 nights, which makes up 23% of total overnight stays in BiH.
Prevention, healing and rehabilitation in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s baths is done by bathing, inhaling, evaporating and rubbing, using modern world-known methods such as: Chinese Therapy, Hydrotherapy, Massage, Acupuncture, Low and High Frequency Pulse Therapy, Therapeutic Therapy and other therapies performed by staff teams of experts composed of qualified specialists, physiotherapists, psychiatrists and other specialists.

Dental Growth
One of the fastest growing areas of medical tourism in Sarajevo is dental tourism. Dentistry is a peculiar branch of medicine. Dentists are often unaffiliated with healthcare systems as a whole, meaning that even nations with universal healthcare may still have to pay for dentistry. In developed countries, dental services are much more expensive than BiH, so expensive that even the combined cost of flights to BiH, hotel, dental procedure, and general travel expenses come in at much less than just the procedure would cost in some countries. Getting a new smile and a great holiday combined, for less money than you would pay for just one of these at home is a very tempting prospect. Tourists from the developed countries – where dental health is hard to come by at anything approaching a reasonable price – are increasingly heading to Bosnia for their dental work.
